Making the move from LastPass to 1Password

Introduction

I’ll admit straight away, the thought of moving all my accrued password details from years of use was a daunting one. Like many others I believed that LastPass would buckle down and sort their crap out after their first disclosure of a Security Incident.

Unfortunately that proved not to be the case.

More than scaremongering, the warnings were true

Despite alarm bells going off when receiving mails from LastPass and a barrage of Social Media warnings (e.g. See Image 1) from reasonably respectable sources like Wired I hung on… But, after the last round of astounding misconduct on the part of LastPass I decided to bite the bullet and move over to 1Password.

There is some good news…

1. Import LastPass details into 1Password

The process is actually relatively painless and streamlined. There is a facility to move your existing LastPass details (inc. secured documents) into a pre-prepared 1Pass account.

Read through this page outlining the LastPass to 1Password process thoroughly before beginning.

2. Get a discount voucher for time remaining on your current LastPass licence

1Pass have created a helper bot AKA the “Concierge” (See Image 2) which allows you to contact a human to arrange obtaining a voucher to use against your 1Pass licence. This means you are not paying for two services at once. Good news indeed.

3. 1Password is frankly a much, MUCH better bit of kit

Every action seems smoother, the GUI is more intuitive and you have access to superior tools like 2FA authentication at your fingertips. The list goes on and far surpasses anything LastPass had on offer.

Lastly, get a hold of your current LastPass licence

Login to your account and head to Dashboard > Account Settings > Account Information > Payment History (See Image 3.)

Then look through the list of archived payments, you’ll find the latest two under Latest Payments (See Image 4.) Download the pertinent current one and hold onto it until contacted by a 1Pass representative. They will walk you through the process to obtain your voucher in which you will need to supply this document.

In conclusion

“Yes, it’s time to ditch LastPass.” One of the best moves I have made in a very long time and well worth the effort.

If you were on the fence about moving I hope I’ve convinced you to do so.
